Senior Portfolio Manager & Wealth Advisor
After running a successful hedge fund, Michael realized that investment returns alone did not provide what his clients needed most: “My goal is to grow not just your portfolio, but your personal net worth and the value of your business while making sure that you have a true financial quarterback across a range of critical wealth management needs.” This has been Michael’s aim since he started Michael Yhip Wealth Partners, now an award-winning advisor practice at RBC Dominion Securities.
Michael started his career as an investment banker in the late ‘90s, advising companies and governments on their debt strategy and financing needs. He then went on to build RBC’s national interest rate risk management business for its commercial clients, which helped a significant number of public and private companies access better tools to help them manage their risks. But it’s when he started his own hedge fund–in 2006–that Michael began to recognize his ability to think differently, create value, and solve unprecedented business challenges. In 2011, he won a Morningstar Investment Award in the category of Best Multi-Strategy Hedge Fund for his performance during 2008-2011, one of the most difficult economic climates in recent history. In 2020, and as a Portfolio Manager, he again achieved exemplary investment performance, which his clients attest to Michael’s expert strategizing, execution, and honest communication during this difficult period.
The combination of dedicated study, significant practical experience, and continuous learning is what translates to superior outcomes for Michael’s clients. His approach is to start by understanding a client’s journey, building a strategy to secure their wealth, and then managing that wealth at every stage of the journey. He acts as an informed guide and key advisor to business owners with the most complex financial affairs.
Michael graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce degree (B.Com - Honors) with a joint specialist in Finance and Economics and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Michael was also one of the early graduates of Singularity University (SU), Canada’s executive program that examines how key converging technologies will shape our future and the leadership challenges and opportunities we will face.
Michael and his wife, Meagan, live in Toronto with their two children, Ella and Isadora (Izzy). In his off-hours, he enjoys practising mixed martial arts (Brazilian jiu-jitsu), reading, traveling and cheering passionately for the Toronto Raptors. Michael has been involved with the community through his work raising funds for the Michael Garron Hospital Foundation, the West Park Hospital Foundation, and other charities.
His current passion project is bringing the story of Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair, who holds the record for most international goals in the sport, to life through an animated film.
Associate Wealth Advisor
Louie Chen graduated from The University of Toronto in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Immersing himself in finance courses, he developed a fascination with the investment markets and the idea of “making money with money.”
A bright, passionate, resourceful business grad, Louie tried out a few industries before finding his home in finance. He formed a small consulting company with some of his fellow University of Toronto alumni, tried his hand at real estate, and eventually unearthed a passion for finance in a role where he supported investment advisor teams and learned everything he could about the industry.
Over time, it became obvious to Louie that he truly enjoyed interacting and building relationships with clients, and wanted to further develop his understanding of the investment markets under experienced mentors. To further his personal growth and career advancement, Louie took the required courses to be licensed by the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), and is currently writing exams to become a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
Louie joined Michael Yhip Wealth Partners in 2018, and has become a senior leader on our team. He is exceptional at handling responsibilities over many areas of the practice, and consistently delivers on our promises to the clients we serve. In 2022, Louie became the first partner within the practice in recognition of his unwavering commitment to our clients, the practice and firm. Louie is a highly skilled problem-solver and communicator, and takes a lot of pride in what we accomplish as a team. He actively advises our clients, takes the lead in executing their wealth management plans, and “believes very few teams can do what we do for our clients. That’s an incredible feeling.”
Away from work, Louie is passionate about cooking and enjoys trying recipes from different cultures for his loved ones. He also loves traveling and has a bucket-list goal to travel to every country in the world during his lifetime. Louie lives in Markham with his wife, Emily, and son, Isaac.
